It’s finally official! After rumors and more rumors, Marvel confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as DOCTOR STRANGE. It was back at the end of October that when we shared with you reports that Cumberbatch was in final negotiations to play the Sorceror Supreme and now we know it’s the real deal. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson (SINISTER) with Jon Spaihts (THE DARKEST HOUR) writing the screenplay, follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Producer Kevin Feige said with the announcement:
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity, in 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Cumberbatch is having a great year; he won the Outstanding Lead Actor Primetime Emmy for his great work on Sherlock not to mention his Oscar worthy performance in the THE IMITATION GAME. He will close out the year with the final entry in the Middle-Earth saga with THE HOBBIT: THE ARMY OF THE FIVE ARMIES as Smaug and the Necromancer.
