Ben Affleck drops out of directing Batman standalone movie

Ben Affleck Batman Justice League

The thought of Ben Affleck directing, co-writing and starring in a standalone Batman film was certainly very exciting, especially considering the projects which Affleck had directed in the past, but it seems that it may have been too much of a good thing. Rumours of Affleck's possible departure from the director's chair have been popping up over the past several months and, despite finally confirming that he would be helming the film just weeks ago, it seems that the movie will indeed need a new director. Although he will still obviously be starring in the film, Ben Affleck released a statement today which announced that he would be stepping down as director.

There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.

Warner Bros. followed up by saying that the studio "fully supports Ben Affleck's decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life." These types of movies are always a massive undertaking, and although it's something Ben Affleck has done before, pulling double duty can sometimes prove to be too much, and with so much on the line, it's only natural that Affleck and Warner Bros. would want the very best for the film. One of THR's insiders added that it's possible that the poor box-office performance of Affleck's recent LIVE BY NIGHT caused the actor to rethink his approach to the Batman flick, but Variety, who broke the news, say that this isn't the case. Variety also says that the search for a new director is on and that Matt Reeves (WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES) is one of several being considered for the job; Deadline adds that Matt Ross (CAPTAIN FANTASTIC) is on the list as well. Ben Affleck's next appearance as Bruce Wayne/Batman will be in JUSTICE LEAGUE which is due to hit theaters on November 16, 2017.

With Affleck out, who would you like to see directing the standalone Batman film?
