The road to the big screen for CHAOS WALKING has been fraught with, well, chaos. Although the big budget sci-fi epic starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland was shot nearly three years ago, since then its path to the theater has been an epic disaster. The Doug Liman directed film tested horribly with audiences resulting in Lionsgate ordering extensive and expensive reshoots. However due to Daisy Ridley's commitments to STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, reshoots didn't commence until April of last year. Furthermore, Liman wasn't even the one who helmed the reshoots, that task fell to EVIL DEAD director Fede Alvarez.
Yikes.
Well after monumental setbacks CHAOS WALKING finally – FINALLY – has a release date. According to Lionsgate, CHAOS WALKING will hit theaters January 22, 2021. This will be three and a half years after the film began shooting. To put things in perspective, CHAOS WALKING wrapped principal photography one month before THE LAST JEDI hit theaters. Even THE NEW MUTANTS is like, "Get your shit together man." For those of you unaware of the specific story details behind CHAOS WALKING, here's a brief plot synopsis:
In the near future, Todd Hewitt has been brought up to believe that a pathogen has killed all women in a colony world and unleashed Noise, the special ability to hear people's and animals' minds. Later, he comes upon a patch of silence and soon discovers the source of the silence: a mysterious woman named Viola Eade – the first he has ever met. On the run, they learn more about the true history of the New World.
In addition, to Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, CHAOS WALKING sports a pretty stellar cast including Mads Mikkelsen, Demian Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, Ray McKinnon and David Oyelowo. Director Doug Liman has also proven himself quite adept with THE BOURNE IDENTITY and EDGE OF TOMORROW. It boggles the mind that a film with this much star power, with this kind of director, and with a pretty intriguing plot hook could have this many problems. The fact that Lionsgate decided to dump the film in late January – typically the doldrums of the movie year – doesn't indicate a lot of confidence. At this point I'm curious to see if CHAOS WALKING ends up being an unexpected gem or an unmitigated disaster.
