Is a Passenger 57 sequel on the way?

Allow us at JoBlo to put on our Sherlock Holmes' hats and speculate on a project that COULD be in the works. This investigation could purely be based on our desire to see this happen but we invite you to go down this rabbit hole because it could prove to be very interesting. I don't want to get everyone's hopes up but clues point to us POSSIBLY getting a secret follow-up to the Wesley Snipes action film, Passenger 57.

News broke yesterday that 22 films were allocated California tax credits with $86.9 million being dangled for projects in front of the likes of Steven Soderbergh, Reese Witherspoon, and the Coen Brothers, to name a few. These names are all very impressive and I'm sure their projects will be great but on the list of 22 films up for these lucrative tax credits is a project under the name "Passenger 58." It's listed at number 15 on the list and it made us wonder what else this could be besides a sequel to a film that taught us to "always bet on black." Warner Specialty Productions Inc. is listed as the company name for "Passenger 58" and it should be noted that Warner Bros. did distribute the 1992 film. It's possible that this could be a code name for another project entirely but why would Warner Bros want to tease us like that? Passenger 57 is largely responsible for making Wesley Snipes a popular action hero and the film has still maintained a cult following since its release. In the film, Snipes portrays a security consultant named John Cutter who finds himself forced to foil a plot to free s captive terrorist during a commercial airline flight. Made for $15 million, the film grossed $44 million at the domestic box office and $66.5 million worldwide. Movies that have grossed far less have earned sequels and I'd say that the continued popularity of the film could warrant a sequel all these years later.

Wesley Snipes also seems to have love for the film still. When Travis Hopson posted his Reel Action video on JoBlo about Passenger 57, Wesley Snipes took to Twitter to tell him how much he enjoyed it and that he appreciated his hard work putting it together. I think just about anyone would love a shoutout from Blade himself but the fact that he took the time to say anything was pretty cool to see and it shows how viable a film like Passenger 57 is today. We don't really have action films like this anymore that are so specific to the era and yet so very timeless.

During a recent interview with "Uproxx" snipes was asked the question "I’m curious, so you’re doing Coming 2 America, a sequel to a movie that came out in 1988. Does this make you think, “I have a lot of movies in that era that are hits, maybe people would enjoy Passenger 58?” The actor's reaction wasn't at all dismissive and even though he didn't address the notion about Passenger 58 specifically, he said this about rekindling old franchises:

"I’ll look at that. And we’ve got some new stuff that fits into that Blade world. That hybrid action genre and the martial arts, comedy martial arts action. So, by the grace of God, we’ll be able to bring a lot of that great quality stuff to the market soon."

We're clearly having fun with this and it should be noted that Warner Bros., Wesley Snipes, or anyone associated with Passenger 57 has said that a sequel is on the way. This was purely some eagle eye sleuthing that made us have a "what if…" thought about the possibility of getting a sequel. It would not be outside the realm of possibility that it could happen and it's definitely sequel news we would all stand by if it came to fruition.
