And the 2012 Golden Schmoes winners are…!!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Unlike previous years where one film will dominate the Golden Schmoes (see table below), it was an overall mix of different films winning this year, which is what I personally prefer anyway (I think it’s kinda boring to vote for the same movie in every single category). Despite both DJANGO UNCHAINED and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES getting the most nominations, it was THE AVENGERS that took away the most wins this year with 5, although DJANGO was close in second place with 4 victories. The two other films with more than 2 wins were the surprising THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, both of which had 3 wins each.

Despite THE AVENGERS winning the most awards, it was DJANGO UNCHAINED that took away the big prize for “Favorite Movie of the Year” with Whedon’s superheroes in 2nd place as the runner-up. Tarantino himself also won for “Best Screenplay” and “Best Music” (natch for most Tarantino films!), while Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio fought it out for “Best Supporting Actor” with Waltz finishing atop.

MOST WINS @ GOLDEN SCHMOES (All-Time):

1. The Dark Knight (2008) 12
2. Return of the King (2003) 10
3. Inception (2010) 9
4. The Two Towers (2002) 9
5. Sin City (2005) 7
6. Fellowship of the Ring (2001) 7
7. Inglourious Basterds (2009) 6
8. The Departed (2006) 6
9. Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) 6
10. Memento (2001) 6
11. Drive (2011) 6

THE AVENGERS actually only had 1 win until the last 5 categories of the Golden Schmoes, where it took 4 categories in a row including “Best DVD/Blu-Ray”, as well as the “Best Action Sequence” of the year for the Final Battle in NY City, “Most Memorable Scene” featuring The Hulk introducing Loki to the ground a few times (see GIF below), as well as the classic “Best T&A” for the leather outfit donned by the always sexy Scarlett Johansson (and check out the GIF below featuring our very own JimmyO in the background during our set visit).

If you’re looking for films that didn’t fare very well despite a bunch of nominations, you’d have to consider PROMETHEUS as the biggest disappointment of the lot, as it was nominated in 8 categories but only won 1 of them and that was (drum roll) — “Biggest Disappointment” of the year. Voila! SKYFALL also didn’t fare all that much better with 8 nominations of its own, while winning nothing. Too many other fanboy films seem to have nixed Bond this time around.

In terms of some of the more “interesting categories”, it was nice to see the TWILIGHT film finally being voted as the “Worst Movie” of the year, after finishing as the runner-up last year and in 2009. Despite not being nominated for an Oscar for directing ARGO, our own schmoes knew much better by giving Ben Affleck the award for “Best Director” of the year (as well as the “Best Line of the Year” for “Argo f*ck yourself“) over Tarantino. Go Ben! As for the individual categories, it was 21 JUMP STREET that you considered to be the “Best Comedy”, WRECK-IT RALPH as “Best Animated Movie”, LOOPER as the “Best Sci-Fi” film of the year, while the “Biggest Surprise” of the year was also 21 JUMP STREET, with just a few more votes than THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. And yes, ya’ll considered Bane as the “Coolest Character” from 2012, only a few votes above Christoph Waltz’s Shultz character from DJANGO.

And lastly, but not leastly, I couldn’t finish this wrap-up without giving massive props to THE CABIN IN THE WOODS which despite scoring only 7 nominations, actually won 3 of them (and was runner-up in the 3 other categories!) including “Best Horror Movie”, “Most Underrated Movie” only a few votes ahead of DREDD 3D and “Trippiest Movie” of the year. Kudos to Joss Whedon for being behind two of the biggest “fanboy” movies of the year! You can see the full list of this year’s winners RIGHT HERE.

Thanks to everyone who participated again this year and who keep making our little awards ceremony what it has become today. We’re actually considering having a “small ceremony” next year, at least to announce the nominees (and yes, we’re hoping to get a couple of cool celebs to read them out). And if you haven’t done so already, be sure to enter our OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST right HERE! And stay tuned for our Oscar coverage, this coming Sunday, February 24th. See ya’ll next year!
