Amy Pascal offers updates on the future of Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise

Although Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have come to an agreement in regards to Spider-Man, the character still firmly remains in Sony's pocket, as do the hundreds of other Spidey-related heroes and villains. Thanks to VENOM and SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, the studio has gotten their Spider-Verse franchise off to a rousing start with plenty more Spider-Verse projects in various stages of development.

While speaking with Fandango, producer Amy Pascal said that the key to keeping Sony's Marvel Universe successful to have "each individual movie stand on its own. The key thing to Venom to Tom Holland, Spider-Man, Spider-Verse is that as wonderful and as tempting as it is to connect the dots, nothing works if the individual movies don't work and have their own integrity. And that is the key to it all." Pascal also confirmed that VENOM 2 is officially in the works and that Tom Hardy will be back to reprise the role, "magnificently playing that character as no one else can." As for why the film was such a box-office success, Pascal says that it's down to a couple of things:

One of them is that Sony did a great job creating that franchise and giving it a life and giving it its own world. Then there's Tom Hardy. When you think of Venom, you'll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters. And once you saw Tom Hardy do this character, that's all you needed to know.

"Everybody would love to see that," Pascal said. "You never know someday… it might happen." In regards to a follow-up to INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, Pascal said that the sequel will still revolve around Miles Morales, but it doesn't mean that we won't someday see Miles make the leap to live-action at some point as well. Pascal concluded by saying that they "have a lot of stories to tell about Spider-Man, in every facet" and that they have big plans for Tom Holland to be "a part of everything."

Spider-Man will return to the big-screen in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME on July 2, 2019, followed by MORBIUS on July 31, 2020 and VENOM 2 on October 2, 2020.
