Book yourself a socially-distanced haircut and start shopping online for some fancy duds because Warner Bros. is developing a Latinx version of the Steve Martin comedy classic FATHER OF THE BRIDE.
The studio has hired Matt Lopez to write the script, making this the third iteration of the laugh-out-loud romantic comedy to date. The first version starred Spencer Tracy as Stanley T. Banks, the father of the bride, while director Charles Shyer's 1991 reimagining of the tale places Steve Martin in the role of George Banks, a father who's clearly not ready to watch his little girl grow up and walk down the aisle. Shyer's version also starred Diane Keaton, Martin Short, BD Wong, George Newbern, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and a young Kieran Culkin. Shyer returned in 1995 to direct a sequel to the aforementioned feature, titled FATHER OF THE BRIDE PART II.
According to Collider, the latest film will tell the story of a father coming to terms with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the guise of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It's also been said that the Latinx version will lean more into the romantic-comedy angle than past spins on the concept.
In talking about his inspiration for the film, sources say that Lopez was inspired to reimagine the idea after his own cross-cultural nuptials as well as the many inspiring Cuban weddings he's attended in the past. His film credits include contributions to such Disney films as BEDTIME STORIES, RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, and THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE.
In other FATHER OF THE BRIDE news, it was announced just this morning that Netflix is making a mini-sequel called FATHER OF THE BRIDE PART 3 (ISH), which is set to debut on Netflix YouTube and Facebook on Friday, September 25 at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET.
You can watch the mini-sequel teaser above, which Nancy Meyers both wrote and directed. The mini-sequel will serve to benefit World Central Kitchen, which is working to provide meals for kids and families impacted by COVID-19. Additional information can be found on their website.
