Mortal Kombat TV spot shows off ass-kicking new footage

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I can't think of any movie that I'm most looking forward to – and simultaneously dreading – than the upcoming videogame adaptation Mortal Kombat. On the one hand, the trailers have indeed looked amazing and brutal – for as much as I loved the 1995 original film, I did miss all the blood and gore – but on the other, I'm still not completely sold on there being a new "POV" character made specifically for the movie (even if I'm rooting for Lewis Tan, I just wish they'd cast him as Johnny Cage or Kuai Liang instead of some rando named "Cole Young"). Not saying there haven't been Mortal Kombat protagonists that weren't from the established canon in the games – but I don't think anyone is clamoring for Taven or Shujinko, and those games had some of the worst stories. However, to be fair, we don't know what his true origins are, so it may be a reveal that he's related – or is – an OG MK kharacter. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Meanwhile, check out the new TV spot at the top of the article with some (though, admittedly, not a ton) of new footage from the film, to whet your bloody appetites!

And here's the official synopsis:

A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter named Cole Young is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of Outworld in a inter-dimensional fighting tournament that occurs once in a generation. Appearances to be made by Shang Tsung, Goro, Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, Kano, Scorpion and more fan favorites!

Mortal Kombat – starring Lewis Tan, Joe Taslim, Josh Lawson, Jessica McNamee, and Hiroyuki Sanada – will get over here to theaters and HBO Max April 16th!

So what do you guys think? And do you have any new theories on who Young might actually be? Either way, sound off below!
