Ryan Reynold has obviously heard the social media chatter online that he should play Johnny Cage in the next Mortal Kombat film and now he's using it to his advantage to promote his Mint Mobile cell phone plans.
The Johnny Cage fan-casting has hit a fever pitch as fans and celebrity personalities alike are giving their two cents on who should play the role in the next Mortal Kombat. The Miz has made sure we know he's available to take on the role while Josh Lawson, who plays Kano in the film, suggested that his good friend James Marsden would be a perfect choice for the character. Ryan Reynolds has a lot generated his fair share of buzz on social media as fans think he would be the right guy for the part because of how he looks, his comedic chops, and his time playing Deadpool on the big screen. Reynolds is currently in the midst of a promotional campaign for Mint Mobile cell phone plans and he has combined what fans want with a promotional blitz that is now a perfect piece of online content. Via his Twitter page, Reynolds put together a video-game style rendering of himself dressed as Johnny Cage fighting for "Mint" against "Big Wireless." The caption reads "What do I do with casting rumors and wireless competitors upset that @usnews just named @mintmobile 2021's best cell phone plan? Finish 'em!" Reynolds always has a bit of fun with stuff like this and it's kind of funny to see that he is very much aware of what fans are saying online about how he should take on the role of Johnny Cage. I highly doubt Reynolds would actually play the character in the sequel and honestly, I think a name like his would overshadow anything else going on in the next film, but it's always fun to speculate over these kinds of things.
Mortal Kombat opened last weekend and it performed solidly at the box office as well as at home via HBO Max. The film is headed towards the success necessary to warrant a sequel and since Johnny Cage was teased a bit at the end of the film, it makes sense that fans are having a bit of fun with who should take on the role. Looking back on the character, Linden Ashby played him in the 1995 film adaptation while Chris Conrad briefly took over for him in the much-panned sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. More recently, the character was voiced by Joel McHale in last year's animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge.
