Producer James Wan and director Simon McQuoid's live-action MORTAL KOMBAT reboot will hit theaters on Martin Luther King Day weekend 2021. And today we have word via Jax actor Mehcad Brooks that this new movie is "something dark, and grounded, and real, and based in physics."
He says:
When I approached Jax I was like okay, well, he’s an assassin, he’s a killer, and he kills monsters, so he has to be a monster. And I was stuck on this Ernest Hemingway quote, and I’m sure I’m gonna fuck it up, but it goes along the lines of ‘Once you’ve hunted and killed trained men long enough, you have very little taste for anything else in the world,’ and that’s who Jax is. That’s how I found this grounded realism in him. Who was he before he was hunting monsters?
He adds:
Yes, you’re gonna get all the fatalities that you’re used to, all the fight moves that you wanna see – of course, we had to put all that stuff in there. But you’re also getting a real story about real people that you can connect with and identify with, and identify with their struggles, and that’s the part that’s gonna be really unexpected.
Works for me!
The cast includes Jessica McNamee (THE MEG) as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, and DEADPOOL 2 and WU ASSASSINS actor Lewis Tan set to play an undisclosed lead character. They join THE RAID star Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.
This new take on the game supposedly centers on
a male protagonist who becomes drawn into the interdimensional tournament, and begins to realize his true potential as a result.
MORTAL KOMBAT will be the feature directorial debut for award-winning commercial director Simon McQuoid, who will be working from a screenplay written by Greg Russo based on the video game franchise. Wan is producing the film with Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins serve as executive producers. The flick will be unleashed on January 15, 2021.
