Mortal Kombat reboot loses its director

Kevin Tancharoen, who helmed the "Mortal Kombat: Re-Birth" fan film as well as both seasons of "Mortal Kombat: Legacy", took to Twitter to announce that he would be leaving New Line Cinema's long-awaited feature film reboot of the video game-turned-film series.

This is sad news indeed. Tancharoen almost single-handedly reignited the "Mortal Kombat" franchise when he directed the incredible short film “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” as a proof of concept for a feature length movie he tried to pitch. The short was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube, and although no movie deal materialized, he was asked to direct the 10-episode web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy", attracting more than 50 million unique visitors. A second season recently premiered on Machinima.

It would've been great to see what Tancharoen would've done with a new MORTAL KOMBAT film, but alas…it is not to be. Hopefully we'll be hearing word on who will replace Tancharoen in the director's chair as well as news on when the new film will finally move forward.
