Mortal Kombat box office suffers defeat in Round 2

Despite making a pretty big splash – all things considered – last weekend, it seems Mortal Kombat recently lost this weekend's box-office round, with the global anime hit Demon Slayer: Mugen Train performing a Fatality on the hyped live-action video game adaptation! Though, it was a close call, as both made about $6 million dollars overall (Demon Slayer at $6.4 million, and Mortal Kombat at $6.2 million), a 70+% for both films.

Deadline states, however, that drop is par the course for video game adaptations (even the 1995 Mortal Kombat dropped over 50% between weekends), so it doesn't necessarily mean a Mortal Kombat sequel is in jeopardy (which is a mixed blessing for sure), especially when factoring in its successful HBO Max views, and the still ongoing pandemic hindering how many theaters are open, how full they can be, as well as who's willing to risk infection to watch it. All things to consider.

But what do you guys think? Did you watch either of the films in theater? If so, what'd you think? Either way, sound off below!

And here's the official synopsis for Mortal Kombat:

Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.
