In an exclusive interview with IGN, Brad Wilson – WarnerMedia’s executive vice president of growth and revenue – discussed HBO Max's new period of uncertainty, as WarnerMedia (who owns HBO Max) is being spun off from AT&T and merging with Discovery. However, during that interview, Wilson also talked briefly about the new Mortal Kombat film, which opened simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max earlier this year, stating:
Mortal Kombat was an interesting title for us, because I will say that while we expected it to do well, we did not expect it to do as well as it did. It's been one of our top assets on the platform. And those customers are now crossing over into watching all the other great titles that we typically see, but also some of the great library content that we have with Friends, The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, etc.
Now, I don't know about you guys, but this is bad news for me, since as a lifelong Mortal Kombat fan, I was not happy with the new movie. But I know if has its fans, so at least somebody's gonna be happy (besides Warner Bros. bean counters, that is), with its success. Hopefully the sequel is better, and not another repeat of Annihilation at least. We'll see.
Either way, here's the official synopsis:
A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter named Cole Young is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of Outworld in a inter-dimensional fighting tournament that occurs once in a generation. Appearances to be made by Shang Tsung, Goro, Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, Kano, Scorpion and more fan favorites!
So what did you guys think? See the movie? If so, what'd you think? Either way, sound off below!
