NetherRealm Studios today revealed three new fighters that are destined to arrive for the studio's Mortal Kombat 11 video game. The first character to emerge from the shadows is Spawn, the classic comic book character created by Todd McFarlane. In addition to showing off the clasic indie character, it was also officially confirmed that both DC's Joker and Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 Terminator are poised to join the fight. Spawn is set to enter the Mortal Kombat 11 tournament on March 17, 2020.
When NetherRealm approached McFarlane about including his original character, Spawn, the comic book creative jumped at the opportunity and told the studio to pull out all the stops.
"I want you to get crazy," McFarlane said to the studio last month. "And the only comment you're really going to hear from me is that you weren't crazy enough. I'm not going to be happy unless you make him super wicked in what he does. You say that to a bunch of 25-year-old developers, you get some good stuff."
"I think they got a couple little bit Spawn geeks there because they're doing stuff and saying stuff in the dialogue, and some of the design work and some of his moves that are pretty deep in the weeds of this Spawn mythology," McFarlane previously stated to the good folks over at ComicBook.com. "To me that was surprising that they didn't go up there and just sort of put a paint job on a character, that they already had a model that they had, and then said, 'Hey, we'll give him some moves and call it Spawn.' They really wanted to dive into it and make him Spawn with movements, powers, and stuff that was unique to him."
Spawn fans are bound to be pleased by the idea of NetherRealm treating Spawn with care, and doing their best to make him feel unique among a roster of outrageous fighters. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Spawn's fatalities, as I'm sure his cape and chains will likely come into play. And like McFarlane, I hope the developers get real nasty with the character, I'm talking some Hellraiser-level shit, my friends.
Mortal Kombat 11 is currently available to play via PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Be sure to keep your eye and ears open for updates as to what we can expect from Spawn, as well as both the Joker and T-800 Terminator characters.
