Morgan Creek planning to reboot The Exorcist, said they’ll never remake it

Yesterday, Deadline included a very interesting piece of information in a throwaway line at the end of their article about Rachel Weisz signing on to star in an Amazon series based on David Cronenberg's 1988 film DEAD RINGERS. That information: Morgan Creek Entertainment has "a planned theatrical reboot of THE EXORCIST in the works for 2021." (You can watch the original THE EXORCIST at THIS LINK.)

It's no surprise that Morgan Creek wants to make a new EXORCIST movie; that's one of the most well-known titles in cinema history, and the franchise has been dormant since the TV series ended its two season run nearly three years ago. It is shocking that such big news broke in such a nonchalant way, and that Morgan Creek is planning to have the new movie ready for theatres sometime next year.

If this project is on the fast track, we should be hearing some more details very soon. Adding some extra intrigue to the whole situation is the fact that Morgan Creek once made a public statement in which they said they would never remake THE EXORCIST:

That's an unusual move for a production company to make. As we've seen over the years, companies tend to be very open to remaking properties that they own. Of course, Morgan Creek's stance on remaking THE EXORCIST could have changed in the last five years, but that tweet does give me some hope for this new project. I'm all for another film that takes place in the world of THE EXORCIST, but have zero interest in seeing someone try to tell the story of Regan MacNeil all over again.

Hopefully the project in the works at Morgan Creek isn't a remake, and is just a reboot in the sense that it's intended to revive the franchise at the box office while telling its own story.

We should find out soon, since this thing is apparently only a year away.
