More spookiness in store as New Line moves forward with The Conjuring 3

Even as a big fan of James Wan's CONJURING movies, I'm still incredibly surprised by how quickly the franchise has grown with the addition of prequels and spin-offs. Deadline reports that another installment of the main series is in the works and that David Leslie Johnson (THE CONJURING 2) has been tapped by New Line Cinema to pen the script for THE CONJURING 3.

However, James Wan, who directed both THE CONJURING and THE CONJURING 2, is not expected to return in the same capacity. Although Wan likely won't direct the film, he will still remain onboard as a producer and perhaps contribute to the story treatment. Not much is known about THE CONJURING 3 at this early date, but, like its predecessors, it will also be based on another of the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. While speaking with our own JimmyO recently, producer Peter Safran said that the plot probably won't revolve around another supernatural possession.

There are some [cases] that maybe aren't as well known, but they spent a fair bit of time researching and were part of [them]. Clearly, we can't do another haunted house movie, right? We can't do another supernatural possession in a house, with a family in peril. Right? So, it's got to be something different than that, I think. There are a lot of places to go, and there's a fair bit of material there.

Before we return to another installment of Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmigia) freaking us the hell out, there are several CONJURING spin-offs for us to hopefully enjoy beforehand. ANNABELLE: CREATION, a prequel to 2014's ANNABELLE, itself a prequel to THE CONJURING, is set to be released on August 11, 2017. The upcoming film follows a dollmaker (Anthony LaPaglia) and his disfigured wife (Miranda Otto) who open their home to an orphanage years after the tragic death of their daughter. Soon after the girls arrive however, a demonic entity in the form of that familiar doll begins to haunt all those in its presence. Check out a review of ANNABELLE: CREATION from our own JimmyO. Further spin-offs in THE CONJURING franchise will focus on the Demon Nun from THE CONJURING 2 as well as The Crooked Man from the same film.
