More details on the Escape From New York remake; casting shortlist for Snake

An ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake has been in Hollywood's crosshairs for a few years, and back in March of 2013 we learned that producer Joel Silver had plans for an entirely new take on the story, with a goal of making a trilogy of films. Like it or not, the remake is still moving forward, and now we've learned some details on what direction the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake might be headed in as well as a shortlist of actors who may be donning Snake Plissken's eyepatch.

Starlog is reporting that the wheels on the remake are turning once again, gathering a few new details including that the film will be “more team-based, as Snake Plissken traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President.” Now it seems that many of the supporting characters have been turned into co-leads with Snake Plissken being the de facto leader of the team.

Starlog goes on to share a few details about who will be making up Snake's team:

“Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.”

So who will be donning the eyepatch as Plissken in this remake? It seems Silver Pictures has a shortlist of actors that they're considering that includes "Sons of Anarchy" and PACIFIC RIM star Charlie Hunnam, "The Walking Dead's" Jon Bernthal, and THE GUEST's Dan Stevens.

Starlog's source says that “Hunnam is currently the top contender now that his run on SONS OF ANARCHY has concluded, although it is unclear if his commitments to PACIFIC RIM 2 will leave the actor unavailable" and that Silver Pictures has already began to commission pre-production artwork from independent artists featuring Hunnam as the one-eyed antihero, possibly to shop to a co-financier at this year’s American Film Market.

No names have been thrown out for the directing job yet but we can expect to hear a "definitive answer" on that before the years end. It was also indicated that the film will carry “a dark tone,” and while the film will still carry a sci-fi element, it will be “less tech-based, and more of a gun-and-run thriller.”
