Creepshow

I couldn't be more excited for the upcoming Shudder series Creepshow, which has executive producer Greg Nicotero taking us back to the world of the George A. Romero / Stephen King anthology films CREEPSHOW and CREEPSHOW 2. My favorite anthologies. The first season of the show is only going to consist of six episodes, but the cool thing there is that each episode is going to contain two separate stories.

The stories we've known about up to this point are:

By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain” by Joe Hill

“House of the Head” by Josh Malerman

“The Companion” by Joe R. Lansdale

“The Man in the Suitcase” by Christopher Buehlman

“All Hallows Eve” by Bruce Jones

“Night of the Paw” by John Esposito

“Bad Wolf Down” by Rob Schrab

“Gray Matter” by Stephen King

Now we can add three more to the list, as the names of three cast members have been announced and each one is starring in a different story we hadn't heard of before.

David Arquette stars in Times Is Tough in Musky Holler, written by John Skipp and Dori Miller, based on their short story. Directed by the original CREEPSHOW's 1st AD and composer John Harrison, this story will show what happens when

leaders who once controlled a town through fear and intimidation get a taste of their own medicine.

Tricia Helfer takes the lead in Lydia Layne's Better Half, directed by Roxanne Benjamin and written by Harrison from a story he crafted with Nicotero. This one is about

a powerful woman who denies a promotion to her protégée and lover but fails to anticipate the fallout.

Benjamin is also directing a story called Skinwalkers, written by Paul Dini and Stephen Langford. Dana Gould stars in the story of

a man who considers a miraculous new treatment for weight loss that turns out to have unexpected complications.

The show's previously announced cast members are all in the segment based on Stephen King's Gray Matter. Giancarlo Esposito, Tobin Bell, and original CREEPSHOW star Adrienne Barbeau are in that one, which was directed by Nicotero and scripted by Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi.

Along with these announcements and revelations comes the confirmation that special effects legend Tom Savini has directed the segment based on Joe Hill's By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain, which was written by Jason Ciaramella. Nicotero said:

There wouldn’t be a Creepshow without Tom Savini. His mark on the horror industry and unflinching approach to special effects make-up did more for the genre than anything since the invention of fake blood. Tom has always been a visionary and his love of cinema and making movies is felt in every frame of his episode. I’m honored to have my friend as a big part of the team."

Savini added:

Having done all the creepy, monstrous, gory effects in the original movie, I am indescribably overjoyed to come full circle now directing an episode of this Creepshow series."

In addition to Nicotero, Savini, Harrison, and Benjamin, segments have also been directed by Rob Schrab and David Bruckner.

Nicotero had this to say about the new additions to the cast:

Part of what makes Creepshow fun is getting a chance to work with some terrific actors who also love the genre. It adds that level of excitement when we get to share our collective love for horror in this fashion. David Arquette and I have worked together before and Dana Gould might be my equal in terms of all things horror. Then bring Tricia Helfer into the mix and Creepshow just shines. Getting to watch her exude power, grace and intensity in a story I wrote can’t be matched."

Now only one last story remains a mystery. At one point, it was said that Nicotero would be directing a Creepshow segment based on the Stephen King story Survivor Type, but it looks like that plan might have changed.

We'll keep you updated whenever there's more Creepshow news to share. The series will premiere on Shudder later this year.
