Moon Knight: Oscar Isaac was hesitant to join the MCU after Star Wars

Oscar Isaac, Moon Knight, MCU, Star Wars

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will be welcoming a new hero to its ranks next week. Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, an ex-soldier with a case of dissociative identity disorder that manifests as distinct individuals who become the conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Oscar Isaac is sure to be a wonderful addition to the MCU, but he was hesitant to sign up for another massive franchise so soon after Star Wars.

Oscar Isaac played Poe Dameron in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and he told THR that although he loved playing the role, the amount of time it took up meant that he wasn’t sure he wanted to dive into the MCU to play Moon Knight.

I had so much hesitation. So much. It was exactly that. I was like, “I just finally got out of a long time of being a part of the Star Wars universe,” which I loved doing, but it definitely took up a lot of my time. So I was excited to get back to more character studies and smaller films. But this came my way, and my instinct at first was like, “This is probably not the right thing to do.” But there was just something about the Steven character that was speaking to me a little bit.

As Oscar Isaac investigated the role more and more, he knew his MCU debut was inevitable. It also helped that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was open to a lot of collaboration. “It just speaks to his willingness to bring in people with very strong points of view and to have that kind of collaboration,” Isaac said. Although Moon Knight is being billed as a six-episode limited series, it seems likely that Oscar Isaac will be sticking around the MCU so some time. The first reactions to Moon Knight have begun pouring out. Our own Alex Maidy has seen the first four episodes of the series and called them “fantastic, dark, violent, and very funny.” Maidy praised Oscar Isaac’s stellar work and added that Ethan Hawke is terrifying. The official synopsis for Moon Knight:

The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

Moon Knight will debut on Disney+ on March 30th.
