Wow, can’t say we saw this one coming…
Gareth Edwards (above), the writer/director of last year’s shoestring alien effort MONSTERS, is close to inking a deal that would see him helm the massive GODZILLA undertaking for Legendary Pictures. Quite a far cry from Guillermo Del Toror, ay?
Word from THR is MONSTERS, despite not being much of a monster movie, is crafted so impressively (especially given its paltry budget), that it’s SXSW premiere last March perfectly coincided with Legendary’s rights acquisition for GODZILLA. Legendary saw MONSTERS, and boom! Timing is everything, and Gareth Edwards seems to be another shining example of such. How else could you explain a dude going from a $800,00 flick to a $200 million one?
No writer has been hired yet to adapt GODZILLA (from David Callaham’s scipt), but it seems Edwards will help develop the project, thereby having input as to who’ll pen the screenplay. Unless it’s Chris Nolan, I’m not sure Legendary (INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT) will net its targeted return.
What says y’all? Is Edwards the right man to bring a new GODZILLA to the masses? Or is there no way in hell after one movie, the dude should be given reins so fatty?
