Most of you seemed to be OK with Universal's plans for a shared cinematic universe featuring their classic movie universe…that is until it was revealed they will be action-adventure flicks instead of horror. Last month the studio hired PRISONERS screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski for THE WOLFMAN reboot, and now Deadline is reporting MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT co-writer Jay Basu will also be involved with one of Universal's new monster movies.
No word on which movie/monster Basu will be writing for, but it could be the Untitled Universal Monster Franchise Film that was announced last month, although that job might belong to Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley. The classic monster cinematic universe is being developed by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, with Kurtzman also directing the THE MUMMY reboot.
I was a little interested in Universal's new monster movies, but now not so much. Maybe Universal's upcoming monster projects will be great action-adventure films, however I'm definitely more than a little annoyed they won't be horror movies, especially if they all end up being as bland and meh as DRACULA UNTOLD.
THE MUMMY is set to open on June 24, 2016.
