Mission: Impossible 7, Tom Cruise, budget

With Tom Cruise going above and beyond to risk life and limb with each Mission: Impossible movie, it’s understandable that those movies cost a pretty penny, but the Mission: Impossible 7 budget might just take the cake. According to Variety, the latest installment of the long-running franchise has cost Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media $290 million to produce.

That budget is tens of millions more than the studio had expected to spend for Mission: Impossible 7, but it proved unavoidable thanks to the frequent delays caused by the pandemic. Variety said that the $290 million price-tag also included the “substantial tax incentives that the global production was able to leverage to rein in costs.” Just as a comparison, Mission: Impossible – Fallout cost about $190 million. The production dealt with numerous shutdowns as the pandemic forced director Christopher McQuarrie and company to scrabble to move between countries in an effort to try and stay ahead. Housing all the various cast and crew members during these shutdowns was also a big cost as well as the global supply chain issues. Despite everything, the crew managed to pull it off and shooting on Mission: Impossible 7 was completed last year.

Mission: Impossible 7 was originally supposed to be shot back-to-back with Mission: Impossible 8, but the pandemic delays nixed that plan. This caused a significant delay to the release of the two sequels, but as the seventh film will reportedly end on a cliff-hanger, the new release dates will make the wait between installments a little easier. Variety also noted that these films are intended to serve as a “sendoff for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character,” with one insider describing the two films as a “culmination” of the entire series. Mission: Impossible 7 will now hit theaters on July 14, 2023 with Mission: Impossible 8 following on June 28, 2024.
