Mira Sorvino wants a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Despite not being a huge box office hit at the time of its release, 1997's ROMY AND MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION went on to gain a sizable cult following and found a bit of a second life once it became available for home release. Fans have held out hope that a sequel could be made and if it was up to the film's star Mira Sorvino, she would do it in a heartbeat with her co-lead Lisa Kudrow.

Sorvino revealed her hopes for a sequel during a virtual interview accepting The Creative Coalition's 2020 Television Humanitarian Award but she says it's all up to Disney at this point:

"It's not in my hands. It's up to Disney. I would be so grateful if they would decide to do it. I know that Lisa and that [screenwriter] Robin Schiff is interested in it. Maybe Alan [Cumming] is interested in it. I heard that maybe Janeane [Garofalo] is interested in it. I love Lisa and I would do anything just to work with her again in any capacity."

ROMY AND MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION told the simple story of a couple of high school best friends Romy, played by Mira Sorvino, and Michele, played by Lisa Kudrow, who realize in the days leading up to their school's ten-year reunion that they have not achieved much in their lives in comparison to their successful ex-classmates. In order to make themselves look better, Romy and Michele decide to create an imaginary and elaborate backstory about their lives which projects them as successful, wealthy entrepreneurs. Of course, as comedy ensues, their lies get exposed during the reunion. The film has struck a chord with audiences over the years because we've all have felt that anxiety regarding not being able to live up to expectations set during our school years and even though the story is at its heart a pretty check your brain at the door comedy, the story is relatable and has heart.  Back in 2017, Lisa Kudrow also expressed an interest in revisiting the characters again in a sequel:

"Well, sure. Yeah, why not? I mean…if it makes sense for those two people to be around my age and see what's going on."

This film is honestly one of my favorite comedies from that period and it certainly still holds up. I wouldn't mind catching up with these two characters again but I would want the story to make sense and have a genuine reason for wanting to get us involved in their world again.
