Mindhunter’s Jonathan Groff reportedly joins the cast of The Matrix 4

Jonathan Groff, The Matrix 4

I'm still not entirely certain if a fourth installment of THE MATRIX franchise is needed, but the project is coming whether we want it or not. Lana Wachowski is returning to direct the sequel, as well as co-writing the script alongside Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, which will find both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles of Neo and Trinity.

The cast of THE MATRIX 4 has been coming together over the past few months, and according to Collider, the latest addition is Jonathan Groff, best known for playing Agent Holden Ford on Netflix's Mindhunter and voicing Kristoff in Disney's FROZEN franchise. As you might expect, the nature of Groff's role is being kept under wraps, so you'll have to use your imagination; Will Groff play an Agent, Program, or human? In addition to Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, the cast of THE MATRIX 4 includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (AQUAMAN), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Neil Patrick Harris (GONE GIRL), and Jada Pinkett Smith (ANGEL HAS FALLEN), who will be reprising the role of Niobe, which she played in THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS. Production on the sequel is expected to kick off early next year. Keanu Reeves has teased that he's read that script for THE MATRIX 4 and that "It's very ambitious. As it should be!"

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana," said Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman, Toby Emmerich when THE MATRIX sequel was first announced "Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe." Lana Wachowski added, "Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
