Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise kicked off with Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA back in 2014, and with KONG: SKULL ISLAND re-introducing us to King Kong last year, it's time for Toho's famous monster to make his return to the big-screen. The upcoming GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will find Godzilla facing off against Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. Beyond several images, we haven't seen all that much from the Michael Dougherty flick, but with San Diego Comic-Con set to kick off fairly soon, that should change. In the meantime, Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) took to Instagram to give us a little something to wet our appetites – a short teaser video in which her character, Madison, attempts to contact Monarch, the secret organization which studies massive unidentified terrestrial organisms.
Things don't sound so good on the other end of that line. Vera Farmiga plays Madison's mother, Dr. Emma Russell, in the film, a paleobiologist working for the Monarch organization. When Madison and Dr. Russell are kidnapped by "a mysterious organization," Russell's ex-husband (Kyle Chandler) embarks on a rescue mission along with Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins). It also turns out that the mysterious organization which kidnaps Dr. Russell and her daughter have "their own plans for the creatures," which could have something to do with Dr. Russell's research. Vera Farmiga has previously teased that her character has "figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level." Following GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, the next film on the MonsterVerse slate will be GODZILLA VS. KONG in 2020.
The official synopsis for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
