Writer Jeff Nathanson has signed on with Universal to direct a feature based on disgraced pop stars Milli Vanilli. Nathanson, who wrote RUSH HOUR 3 and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, has secured the blessings of both Milli and Vanilli (Fabrice Morvan and the estate of the late Rob Pilatus) and will begin work on the script as soon as RUSH HOUR 3 wraps production. And isn’t it about time we had a 90s-era period movie? I for one would love to be in on the wardrobe discussions picking out the Skidz, Hypercolor and Oakleys for the cast. Best Costume Design Oscar here we come! If you somehow don’t know the story, Milli Vanilli won a Grammy for Best New Artist with hits like “Blame It On The Rain” and “Girl You Know It’s True” but later were forced to return the award when it was revealed the didn’t sing any of the music on their album. Morvan and Pilatus, who died of a drug overdose in 1998, were hired by a producer to be the face of a “band” that already had recorded music. They agreed thinking it wouldn’t amount to much but the songs took off and the duo were trapped in the lie. The duo had been nervous about selling their story to Hollywood but Nathanson convinced them by assuring them it would be their story, not a Hollywood story of them. If you’re curious, “The Best of Milli Vanilli” was released on CD last year.
