Milla Jovovich defends Hellboy reboot saying it’ll be a cult classic

Director Neil Marshall's HELLBOY reboot starring David Harbour punched its ungodly way into a theater near you this past weekend and got terrible reviews. In fact, the reboot currently holds a 14% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with the site's Critics Consensus currently reading: Bereft of the imaginative flair that made earlier Hellboys so enjoyable, this soulless reboot suggests Dante may have left a tenth circle out of his Inferno.

Ouch. But that said it appears that the Blood Queen herself Milla Jovovich is out and about defending the movie. Specifically, Jovovich took to Instagram to let us all know her thoughts, which go a little something like this:

It’s always stressful on opening weekend and @hellboymovie is no different. You work super hard to make something fun and entertaining and have to absorb the negative reviews by movie critics, but hey! THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY. All I’m gonna say before going to bed is this: All my raddest films have been slammed by critics. It’s fucking hilarious. Dazed and Confused? Seriously? Classic movie. The Fifth Element! You would have thought that was the worst movie ever made if you read the reviews in like ‘98. Zoolander? Slammed. Joan of Arc? Disaster. Resident Evil? Let’s not even go there. Anyway, every one of those films is now a cult classic. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. And this will be too. Mark my words.

Her post then continued on to tell us all why she believes this film will become a cult classic:

1. Because of the amazing actors. David Harbour. Ian Mcshane. Daniel Dae Kim. Sasha Lane. They are all so damn wonderful and talented, the movie is worth seeing just because they’re in it, especially one that’s so much fun to experience as this is. 2. @mikemignola who created the #Hellboy comics helped write the script and was on set every single day to make this film as close to his vision as possible. 3. It was directed by one of the greats. #NeilMarshall who brought us “The Descent”. One of the greatest horror movies ever. Trust me, you’re gonna have a blast watching the new @hellboymovie. I mean, one critic said, “it’s a loud, gory mess only a teenager would love.”HELL yea Hellboy! Let’s have some fun! And with that, I wish you all a good night! Xo.

I steered clear of the movie this weekend so I cannot comment. But that said I do still have every intention of checking it out once it hits Blu-ray so I guess I'll find out if I agree with Jovovich or not once that day comes. Until then, remember that the reboot was written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, Aron Coleite, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and finds Hellboy:

along with his team of paranormal researchers, trying to save the world from a medieval sorceress who wants to destroy humankind.

Harbour's co-stars include Milla Jovovich as the villainous Nimue, Queen of Blood, Thomas Haden Church as Lobster Johnson, Ian McShane as Hellboy's mentor Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as his love interest Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell as the elder witch Ganeida, Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio (who can turn into a jaguar), Sophie Okonedo as the seer Lady Hatton, Alistair Petrie as Lord Adam Glaren of the supernatural mystery investigating Osiris Club, and Brian Gleeson as the wizard Merlin. The HELLBOY reboot is now playing in a theater near you.
