When I woke up this morning I can definitely say that I didn't expect this piece of casting news to come across my desk (an empty refrigerator box counts as a desk, right?) A little over a year ago it was announced that Woody Allen would write and direct a new half-hour television series for Amazon. Since then we've heard little on what the potential series would be about, only that Allen has "regretted every second since I said OK" to the project and hasn't "had a pleasurable moment since I undertook it." Sounds rough.
It seems that Woody Allen has finally made some progress on the show as Deadline announced today that Woody Allen himself would star in the series alongside Miley Cyrus and Elaine May. Yea, that brought a little vertical motion to my eyebrow as well. Elaine May has worked with Allen before on SMALL TIME CROOKS, which was also her last appearance as an actress, but the combination of May, Woody Allen, and Miley Cyrus has me wondering just what Allen has cooked up for Amazon. Deadline doesn't have much information about the content of the new series, only to say that it's set in the 1960's and filming will begin in March.
With the odd exception, I'm not much of a Woody Allen fan, but even I'm curious to see what he'll do within the realm of a half-hour television series. Consider me intrigued. Allen's next film is still untitled but he's gathered together an impressive cast, as he always seems to, including Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Corey Stoll, Ken Stott, and more.
