Production on the long-awaited sequel to TOP GUN got underway last month, but a key role still needs to be cast: the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards). If you'll recall from the original film, Goose was Maverick's best friend and wingman, but in a tragic accident, Goose was killed. Cue the waterworks. TOP GUN: MAVERICK will find Tom Cruise returning to reprise his role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, but his departed best friend will live on, in a manner of speaking, in the form of Goose's son.
THR reports that several actors are currently the front-runners for the role of Goose's son, including Miles Teller (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE), Nicholas Hoult (X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX), and Glen Powell (SET IT UP). Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, and David Ellison have reportedly been testing actors for several weeks, with previous contenders including Dylan O'Brien (AMERICAN ASSASSIN) and Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles), but it seems that it's down to Teller, Hoult, and Powell. As for which one will walk away with the role, it's hard to say, but Miles Teller has worked with director Joseph Kosinski before on ONLY THE BRAVE. Personally, I think Glen Powell has the sort of easy-going kindness which would truly make him the son of Goose, if they choose to go in that direction. TOP GUN: MAVERICK will find Tom Cruise serving as a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, one of which I'd imagine will be Goose's son. The plot will also supposedly be tackling issues relating to drone warfare, and Cruise has teased that like the first film, the sequel will be a competition film, but with a progression for the character of Maverick. Val Kilmer will also be returning as Iceman. TOP GUN: MAVERICK is set for a July 12, 2019 release.
Between Nicholas Hoult, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell, who do you think is the best fit to play the son of Goose?
