Milana Vayntrub cast as Squirrel Girl for Marvel’s New Warriors

Folks have been fan-casting Squirrel Girl for just about as long as I've been aware that there was a Squirrel Girl, which admittedly hasn't been that long. Actresses such as Anna Kendrick (PITCH PERFECT) and Shannon Purser (Stranger Things) have expressed interest in the role in the past, but THR has reported that Milana Vayntrub (This is Us) will be the one to don a pair of adorable ears in order to play Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, on Marvel's New Warriors.

The upcoming 10-episode Freeform comedy series will follow "six young people learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates." Squirrel Girl is a "totally empowered fangirl" who has the incredible powers of a squirrel and whose "greatest quality is her optimism." Also starring in New Warriors will be Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Mr. Immortal, a man with the amazing ability to live forever, but "hasn't made use of it at all," Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) as the "brilliant and noble and maybe a bit full of himself" Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Speedball, an "impulsive people-pleaser" who throws completely out of control balls of kinetic engery, Matthew Moy as the "shy hypochondriac" known as Microbe who is "impossible to keep secrets around," and Kate Comer (The Comeback) as Debrii, a low-level telekinetic who is "proud, funny and quick witted."

In a statement, New Warriors show-runner Kevin Biegel (Enlisted) said

I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It'll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.

Jeph Loeb, who will executive produce New Warriors alongside Biegel, added, "we’re so lucky to have assembled such a diverse and incredibly talented cast. We can’t wait for the fans to see what’s in store when we unleash these iconic characters into the world!" Marvel's New Warriors will launch in 2018.
