Mila Kunis & Kate McKinnon join forces in The Spy Who Dumped Me trailer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

How much do we really know about our partners? Sure, we think we know what they're all about, but chances are just as good that they could be an international super spy, or maybe that only happens if you're Mila Kunis. In THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME, Kunis plays Audrey, a women who is unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy, along with her best friend, Morgan (Kate McKinnon), when her ex-boyfriend (Justin Theroux) shows up at her apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Much to their own surprise, the duo jump into action, and find themselves on the run in Europe from the assassins and a suspiciously charming British agent (Sam Heughan), as they hatch a plan to save the world. The first trailer for the Lionsgate film has been released, and to my surprise, it actually looks more decent than I was expecting.

Director Susanna Fogel, who co-wrote the film with her friend David Iserson, told Entertainment Weekly that the project began to take shape when the pair wanted to explore action films through the lense of female friendship. "We were at lunch one day and one of us said, ‘Broad City meets Bourne,'" Fogel said. "Our jumping-off point was, What would we do if we had to run from the cops in, like, my Toyota Prius? What would we do if we were confronted with an assassin? We’d probably make fun of something he was wearing." Fogel also wanted to make sure that the action was the real deal, saying, "It was really important that it felt legitimate. We were going for stunts that weren’t ironic, for real action-movie action." THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME will hit theaters on August 3, 2018.
