Mike Flanagan: The Dark Tower is his dream project

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Have you guys seen Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's DOCTOR SLEEP? If you haven't, it's a pretty damn effective and disturbing film. Stephen King big screen adaptations are usually hit or miss, but Flanagan seems to have a good feel for it! During a recent Fantasia Film Fest Q&A (covered by Syfy Wire) , Flanagan was asked what his dream project would be, and the answer was enough to set the hearts of all King fans aflutter:

"The Dark Tower is forever going to be the story I wish I could tell. That would be the Holy Grail. I mean, talk about an adaptation challenge… So many very talented people have poured so much time and heart and soul and blood, sweat and tears trying to crack that."

Think about it – Mike Flanagan adapting THE DARK TOWER. While the property has been filmed in the past (to disasterous results), after his success with DOCTOR SLEEP and long-form storytelling via his Netflix series, "The Haunting of Hill House" and its upcoming follow-up "The Haunting of Bly Manor", he seems like the logical choice, right?

On Bly Manor, which is based on Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw", Flanagan had this to say:

“It’s not about doing a straight adaptation anymore – that’s already been done.” he said. “We’d cover two episodes, and then we’d have eight episodes of filler. I need to make a 10-hour version of this. That way, I can hopefully honor the source material but do it in a way that’s constantly surprising. And what I learned with Hill House was that [the show] takes on a life of its own rather quickly.”
