Sony, Platinum Dunes, and Circle of Confusion have been working on an adaptation of the IDW comic book Zombies vs. Robots for nearly six years now, although they have dropped the Zombies vs. Robots title for the much less interesting INHERIT THE EARTH. Screenplays have been written by the likes of J.T. Petty, Oren Uziel, and Craig Borten. SHREK / THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA director Andrew Adamson was attached to helm the project.
Now the companies are going back to the drawing board, but they're doing so with a very interesting filmmaker. ABSENTIA / OCULUS / HUSH / BEFORE I WAKE / OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL director Mike Flanagan, who recently wrapped production on an adaptation of Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME, has signed on to write and direct INHERIT THE EARTH, and is said to be reconceiving the whole project.
Created by Chris Ryall and Ashley Wood, the source material is set in
a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies that has only one chance at recovery – a team of robots that must protect and clone a lone surviving human baby. They just need to do this amidst the endless hordes of zombies who have been driven rabid by their frustration at inedible bots and their lust to eat the one living brain left on the planet.
I've never read the comics, but I dig concept and would love to see this idea brought to the screen. I'm already on board to see anything Flanagan does, and the fact that he wants to make a movie about zombies fighting robots boosts my enthusiasm for this project even further.
Flanagan and Platinum Dunes previously worked together on OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL, which has earned $81 million at the global box office on a $9 million budget.
