Director Mike Dougherty is really digging into the history of Godzilla while crafting a sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 GODZILLA film. Not only will this follow-up have Godzilla facing off with his old school co-stars King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, but apparently it will even feature the Oxygen Destroyer, a device that originally appeared in the first GODZILLA back in 1954.
Created by Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, the Oxygen Destroyer was the most effective weapon to ever be used against Godzilla, dissolving his flesh and bones until nothing remained.
Yesterday, Dougherty took to his Twitter account to share a picture from the set of his GODZILLA film that shows he has a replica of the Oxygen Destroyer on hand. Now we can only wonder – will the Oxygen Destroyer actually play a part in Dougherty's movie, or will it merely be an Easter egg that's hidden in the background? These entries in the GODZILLA franchise do have their own Dr. Serizawa, Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, but it's unlikely that he would build an Oxygen Destroyer to use against Godzilla – he seemed to be a fan of the big guy.
We can only continue to wonder for now, because Dougherty isn't giving away any details and there has been no synopsis provided for this sequel, which Dougherty wrote with his KRAMPUS co-writer Zach Shields.
Even the title of this film is a mystery – for a while it was being called GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS or GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS, but that may not be the case anymore. We do know for a fact that the movie stars Ken Watanabe, Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Sally Hawkins, Zhang Ziyi, Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Randy Havens, Jonathan Howard, Anthony Ramos, Bradley Whitford, and Elizabeth Ludlow.
Whatever the movie ends up being called, it's scheduled to reach theatres on March 22, 2019.
Godzilla probably isn't going to be dissolved at the end of this film, because he has to come back for Adam Wingard's GODZILLA VS. KONG, which is set to be released in 2020.
