With The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming to theaters later today, Illumination is ready to preview its next animated adventure for the silver screen. Today, the studio released a teaser trailer for Migration, an animated film about a family of ducks trying to convince their overprotective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime. Illumination’s Migration teaser trailer introduces the family and finds them taking to the skies for a breathtaking flight before being grounded by bad weather.

Benjamin Renner (Ernest & CelestineThe Big Bad Fox and Other Tales) directs from a screenplay by Mike White (White LotusSchool of Rock). Illumination founder Chris Meledandri is serving as producer on the upcoming film. Initially, Illumination set Migration up for a summer release, but the film will flock to theaters during Christmas instead. While that’s a ways off, you don’t have to wait to check out the film’s gorgeous animation, quirky characters, and bold sense of adventure.

Migration centers on a family of ducks, each at a different age, preparing to fly from New England to the Bahamas. The ultimate vacation destination awaits, but the younger ducks must convince their overprotective father to make the trip. Along the journey, the family encounters thunderstorms, strange species of birds, and other hazards that make the trip about survival instead of a leisurely flight to fun in the sun.

Migration is the latest film to join the Illumination family, which includes the Despicable MeMinionsSecret Life of PetsSingThe Grinch, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchises. Watching the Migration teaser trailer, you’ll notice a dramatic visual upgrade from Illumination’s humble beginnings. The studio is making significant strides in character design, environments, and articulation. With open spaces, gorgeous vistas, and picturesque mountainsides featured in the film, Illumination can spread its wings for Migration.

Despite the Migration teaser trailer showcasing the family of ducks, the studio still needs to release a complete cast list. IMDB lists Anne Tenney (The CastleAlways GreenerBack to the Rafters) as a cast member, but she’s the only confirmed actor so far. We’ll bring you more details for Migration as they become available.
