Whether you are a fan of the 1999 found footage classic THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT or not, you can't deny the influence the film had on the horror genre over the past 15 years. The film was a box office success that spawned countess imitators (as well as a sequel that split genre fans as much as the original film did) and is still regarded as the godfather (or would that be godmother) of found footage horror films.
In the many years since THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was released, cocreator Eduardo Sanchez has continued to work within the genre, directing some impressive films including the alien/sci-fi horror ALTERED, the disturbingly creepy LOVELY MOLLY, and the highly anticipated Bigfoot-themed found footage film EXISTS. But fans have been wondering if we'd see another Blair Witch film for years and now Movies.com has hit Sanchez up for his thoughts on the potential for a return to the film that jump-started his career.
Sanchez was asked about his thoughts on the current crop of found footage films and why it took so long to catch on after THE BLAIR WITCH popularized the format. Sanchez responds…
That's an observation I've talked to a lot of people about. There were other found-footage movies, but when Cloverfield did its thing there were a whole bunch of them afterward. I think a lot of people, including us, just didn't know. We never imagined doing another Blair Witch found-footage movie. Our plan for the sequel is definitely not doing a found-footage movie. It took a while for people to just figure out what Blair had done; I'm not sure why. The film was so experimental and kind of came out of nowhere so people didn't know what to think of it and weren't sure if that style could be repeated.
Sanchez goes on to say that he's actually been talking with Lionsgate about doing another BLAIR WITCH film and now that the company has picked up his Bigfoot film EXISTS, perhaps talks will begin again on a potential sequel. Says Sanchez:
You know, Lionsgate owns the property, so it's obviously up to them right now. We've been talking to them for the past four or five years about doing it, but there's nothing really in the works right now with us. But I think you're right and maybe just being back at Lionsgate will help move things forward on another Blair Witch movie.
So let's hear it. Would you want to see another BLAIR WITCH film? Do you think there is still some room in that universe to tell another creepy story? I know I'm down for it!
