Midsommar trailer teases a festival worth fearing

Director Ari Aster has a lot to live up to after his debut feature HEREDITARY broke everyone’s brains in the best way possible last year. We didn’t have to wait long for his follow up, MIDSOMMAR, and after a lot of ominous teases at a happy-looking Swedish festival gone wrong, we now have the first trailer which hints at another unsettling (and more brightly-lit) work from Aster, with poor Florence Pugh perhaps getting the worst of it.

Only a little over a month away, don’t expect for another trailer to come out revealing more horrific details about MIDSOMMAR as the mystery is surely what will drive genre enthusiasts to the theater. This certainly looks like the same kind of slow burn as HEREDITARY, and potentially just as f**ked up, with Aster demonstrating the same eerily precise visual aesthetic and framing as before. Here's the synopsis:

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

MIDSOMMAR is in theaters July 3.
