Michael Shannon & Shea Whigham face off in trailer for The Quarry

It's a mini-Boardwalk Empire reunion! Lionsgate has released a trailer for THE QUARRY, a thriller which just so happens to star two of my favourite actors, Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham, who both starred on HBO's Boardwalk Empire series. After murdering a traveling preacher, a fugitive drifter (Shea Whigham) takes his identity and escapes to a small town where the local police chief (Michael Shannon) quickly grows suspicious. After a gruesome crime-scene is discovered at the local quarry, all hell breaks loose.

THE QUARRY is based on the novel by Damon Galgut and directed by Scott Teems, who also co-wrote the script with Andrew Brotzman. In a statement, Teems said, "Galgut’s novel dealt with race relations in post-apartheid South Africa, but the character conflicts bear striking similarity to the immigration crisis we face in America today, and our attitudes toward those who don’t look like us. As such, the story offered an all-too-obvious translation from the barrens of the African coast to the wastelands of rural Texas. Different continent, same problems. History repeats."

The official synopsis for THE QUARRY:

From the novel by Damon Galgut comes this searing thriller, a tale of sin and redemption set in the wilds of Texas. After murdering a traveling preacher, a fugitive drifter (Shea Whigham, Joker) travels to a small town and poses as the man he killed. Though the congregation loves the drifter’s sermons of forgiveness, the local police chief (Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon, The Shape of Water) is suspicious of the man. Soon a gruesome discovery at a local quarry forces the killer to fight for his freedom.

THE QUARRY will hit select theaters and On Demand on April 17, 2020.
