Michael K. Williams wants another crack at the Star Wars franchise

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

At one point, Michael K. Williams (The Wire) was slated to play the role of Dryden Vos in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, but that was before Christopher Miller and Phil Lord were shown the door and Ron Howard was brought in to reshoot much of the film. Unfortunately for Williams, those reshoots didn't fit in with his schedule and Howard was forced to recast the role with Paul Bettany. As getting to play a role in a STAR WARS film is a dream come true for many actors, I can only imagine that getting cut from the film through no fault of your own must suck, but Michael K. Williams certainly doesn't gold a grudge against the franchise as he told Variety that he still wants another crack at it.

Michael K. Williams told Variety that he hasn't had the chance to see SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY yet, but gave a shout out to his fellow cast-mates. "Even though I didn’t make the final cut, they’re still my cast mates. I love you guys," Williams said. The actor is sure he'll get around to watching the film at some point (maybe when it hits home-media later this month), but made sure to mention that he's still "interested in getting another shot in being in that galaxy…I would love another opportunity to be in 'Star Wars.'" As Lucasfilm hired Michael K. Williams in the first place, there's no reason why they couldn't do so again for another STAR WARS movie given that we never got to see his work on SOLO.

Although Dryden Vos was mostly human in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, he wasn't always intended to be. Michael K. Williams has previously said that Vos was going to be a motion-capture character who was "half mountain lion, half human." Interesting. "He was extremely sophisticated," Williams added. "Very rich. He’d been around the world, older guy, and it was sort of a love triangle between Emilia Clarke’s character, Qi’Ra, and the young Han Solo." Williams explained that it wasn't a full-blown love triangle, but more like a "pissing contest" going on for Qi'ra's attention. "[Vos] is old and [Han] is younger so it was that thing also going on, like ‘Young buck, I’ve been around the world.’ But he’s like ‘The young chick wants the young buck,'" Williams said. "So there was a little bit of that energy going on, but the relationship on paper was definitely with Qi’ra and Han Solo."

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY will be released on DVD/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD on September 24th.
