Another Sopranos reunion is in the works, as Michael Imperioli and David Chase are supposedly writing a script together.
On a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Michael Imperioli–who played Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos–revealed that he and The Sopranos creator David Chase have a project in development. “We’re writing a movie together right now for me and Steve Schirripa. It’s a mystery project. I can’t talk about it beyond that.” We can only assume that Imperioli fears being whacked by Chase’s friends in waste management if he spoils the outline.
With Imperioli, Chase and Schirripa (who played Tony Soprano’s train-loving brother-in-law Bobby Baccalieri) tied to the project, speculation on another Sopranos movie is unavoidable. David Chase previously said, “I have an idea for [a second Sopranos movie] that I’d like to do.” Could this “mystery project” be that movie?
The first major expansion of The Sopranos franchise (we’ll ignore the godawful video game), the hugely successful The Many Saints of Newark, told the story of Tony Soprano’s early years, particularly under the tutelage of Dicky Moltisanti, Christopher’s father. It was, to the surprise of many fans, narrated by none other than Christopher Moltasanti, Tony Soprano’s nephew who was killed off in the final season. James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, played the young Tony.
With Christopher’s cameo (which led to an incredible ending, whether you liked the film or not), The Many Saints of Newark showed there were no limits in how additional Sopranos stories could incorporate characters both past and present. Could Bobby, who was murdered in the series’ penultimate episode “The Blue Comet”, make his return?
If this collaboration between Michael Imperioli and David Chase ends up being another Sopranos movie, what would you like to see? Which characters or storylines would you like to see expanded on? Let us know in the comments below!
