Michael Fassbender’s Magneto is a bloody mess in new Dark Phoenix image

The latest X-Men movie – DARK PHOENIX – has gone through more release shifts than your typical entry for an established superhero movie series, but after what seems like forever the movie is only a few months away (hopefully). While we have seen the first trailer it still feels like this movie has a big question mark stamped on it, but it seems like one thing is for certain: Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is NOT having a good time at all. A new image finds him cut and bloodied and being taken down a hallway by other X-Men, making you wonder what the hell happened to him and why was there no metal around? Did he get into a fight at Lego Land?

The other mutants in the photos are Beast (Nicholas Hoult, also looking worse for wear), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Selene (Kota Eberhardt). It’s hard to discern anything from the photo other than things look like they’ve gone to hell, but hey, at least they’re all together.

This photo calls to mind another photo from late 2017 where Magneto is on the ground, defeated and surrounded by S.W.A.T.-like guys, but perhaps he’s saved at the last moment by these guardian angels above. It all makes you wonder where the character is at this time around, going from killing off Nazis in the first movie, fighting for mutant rights in the second and then doing whatever it was he was doing in APOCALYPSE. He seems to be on relatively good terms with the X-Men, though, and perhaps he will side with them to help take on whatever threat is coming their way.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

DARK PHOENIX is in theaters June 7.
