We’re used to other critics being critical of Michael Bay’s work, but this time the critic turns out to be Bay himself, and the director is speaking candidly about his latest release Ambulance by slamming some of the CGI special effects featured in the film.
During an interview with Les Cinémas Pathé Gaumont, Bay discussed the special effects in Ambulance and voiced his displeasure about some of the CGI. It seems that he was happy with some of the practical effects that were used but he did call some of the CGI “sh*t.” You can check out what Bay had to say below!
“All those explosions and cars flipping, that’s all real. That’s all live, real, ratchets. It looks very dangerous [and] it could be very dangerous if you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. Most of it is real stunts. There’s very few blue screen shots on the movie. There’s not a lot of CGI. Some of the CGI is sh*t in this movie. There’s a couple shots that I wasn’t happy with, okay? Alright.”
Our very own JimmyO reviewed Ambulance recently and he didn’t mention any questionable CGI so maybe Michael Bay is being a bit of a perfectionist. He is, as most in the industry know, the king of all things that go BOOM! I’d argue that no one really does it better. It’s not always going to be cerebral but it sure is fun.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Needing money to cover his wife’s medical bills, a decorated veteran teams up with his adoptive brother to steal $32 million from a Los Angeles bank. However, when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate thieves hijack an ambulance that’s carrying a severely wounded cop and an EMT worker. Caught in a high-speed chase, the two siblings must figure out a way to outrun the law while keeping their hostages alive.” The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza Gonzalez.
