New details on Hemsworth & Thompson’s characters in MiB: International

The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe, but in the upcoming MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL, they'll tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization. As this is something which was revealed in the first trailer for the film, that revelation isn't exactly news, but a recent feature from Entertainment Weekly does shed some more light on the situation as well as drop some details about our new agents played by Chris Hemsworth (AVENGERS: ENDGAME) and Tessa Thompson (CREED II).

As this will be the first MEN IN BLACK film without Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones leading the charge, franchise producer Walter F. Parkes told EW that they knew they would need to work hard in order to get it right.

The first three pictures are very dependent on Will and Tommy’s particular chemistry and on the comic approach that [director] Barry [Sonnenfeld] brought. So we knew we needed performers with these vivid personalities and an inherent rapport, and luckily we could see the seeds of that in Thor. I think the biggest difference [in this story] is that this time the enemy is within. MIB has been compromised from inside, which leads them on a globe-trotting adventure to discover the true nature of the threat.

Much like Agent J (Will Smith) in the original film, Molly/Agent M (Thompson) is a new addition to the Men in Black team, but unlike Smith's character, Agent M was never sought out by the organization but in fact tracked them down herself. "The genesis of the whole thing is a young girl whose life had been altered by an encounter with Men in Black," Thompson said, "and the idea is that unlike Will [Smith] in the original films, she’s a protagonist who hasn’t been recruited but has found them." It's Agent O (Emma Thompson) who sees the potential in Molly and sends her to London in order to team up with Agent H (Hemsworth). Although he's considered to be one of the greatest to ever wear the suit, MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL will find Agent H having fallen on hard times after an emissary from a powerful alien government is killed on his watch. Together, Agents H and M set out to identify the killer as well as locate the mole at the heart of the Men in Black. Along with Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Emma Thompson , MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL also stars Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, and Rebecca Ferguson, whose role of the seductive alien Riza was originally meant to be a fully CG character, but makeup and hair designer Jeremy Woodhead told EW that "you don’t want to employ one of the great beauties of our time and then cover her in prosthetics. What’s the point?"

MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL will hit theaters on June 14, 2019.
