I love the country of Brazil and have visited several times, but the country is going through some serious troubles right now, including political issues and its worst recession in twenty-five years. These are troubles I've seen signs of first hand, and they will be reflected in the story of director J.C. Feyer's psychological thriller THE TRACE WE LEAVE BEHIND (or O RASTRO).
Scripted by producer André Pereira and Beatrice Manela, the film is
set against Brazil’s roiling social unrest and centers on bright, recently-promoted doctor Joao, who is tasked with coordinating the overnight transfer of patients when yet another public hospital is closed in Rio. When a young girl patient goes missing, he tries to locate her, and is gradually drawn into a world he wishes he had never entered.
Leandra Leal (pictured above), Rafael Cardoso, Felipe Camargo, Claudia Abreu (pictured below), and Jonas Bloch star in the film, which is currently filming in Rio de Janeiro.
THE TRACE WE LEAVE BEHIND is a co-production of the Rio-based company Lupa Filmes and MGM's Orion branch, which has gotten involved through the Article 3 tax break facility for investment in Brazilian productions. Imagem Filmes will be giving TRACE a wide theatrical release in its home country and the hope is that it will be able to find international success as well.
Producer Malu Miranda promises TRACE will be a "twisted yet beautiful film". Brazilian genre films always have my attention, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
