Back in September of 2013 we learned that Roland Emmerich was aiming to reboot his cult-classic sci-fi flick STARGATE alongside his producing partner and co-writer Dean Devlin, with the intent to create a new trilogy of films set in the STARGATE universe. Now Deadline is reporting that MGM and Warner Bros. are partnering with the INDEPENDENCE DAY creators to make it happen.
The original film starred Kurt Russell and James Spader and revolves around a team of U.S. military professionals who discover and enter a wormhole to another planet. The movie grossed more than $200 million worldwide and spawned several television spin-offs.
In this day and age of countless remakes and reboots it could almost seem like this is just another entry in the long list of unnecessary redo's, but the interesting thing about the STARGATE reboot is that Emmerich himself will be directing what MGM's Gary Barber says is a 'reinvigorated vision' of the wildly popular property.
Said Emmerich and Devlin:
“The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”
MGM’s Jonathan Glickman will oversee it with Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman.
