Meryl Streep to star in a Panama Papers thriller from Steve Soderbergh

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

It's been announced that legendary actress Meryl Streep will star in THE LAUNDROMAT, a thriller based on the Panama Papers directed by Steve Soderbergh. The documents, dating back to the 1970s, were drawn up by, and seized from, Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca. In what was a historic event in corporate history, 11.5 million documents were leaked which detailed financial and attorney-client information to more than 214,488 offshore individuals. While Streep's role is set, it's being said that Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas are also in talks to star.

Scott Z Burns, who in the past has teamed with Soderbergh for films such as CONTAGION, SIDE EFFECTS, and THE INFORMANT! will pen the script, which based on the book by Jake Bernstein titled Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite.

While the nature of Streep's character is being kept under wraps at this time, it's to be believed that she'll serve as the emotional through-line of the film. Michael Sugar, Lawrence Grey, Gregory Jacobs, Soderbergh and Burns are producing. THE LAUNDROMAT has recently entered its pre-production phase. We'll be sure to update you as more news concerning the film becomes available.
