Meryl Streep Mary Poppins Returns Emily Blunt

It may have taken over fifty years, but a sequel to Disney's classic MARY POPPINS is on the way, whether you want it or not. Even if you're not completely on-board with Disney revisiting the magical nanny, you can't fault their casting so far. Emily Blunt will be taking over the role played by Julie Andrews in 1964 and she'll be joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will be playing a street lamplighter named Jack. In addition to acting, it's also expected that he'll be developing a few new songs for the film as well.

Variety has the scoop on the latest member to join the cast of MARY POPPINS RETURNS and its someone who has worked with Emily Blunt before. The outlet reports that Meryl Streep will be playing the role of Mary Poppins' cousin, Topsy, in the upcoming film. The supporting role will, naturally, let Streep do a little singing. MARY POPPINS RETURNS will draw from all of P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins books and take place in Depression-era London. Following a personal loss, the now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by Mary Poppins once again and, through her "unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives." Just bring back the penguins in bow-ties and I'll be happy.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS is set for a December 25, 2018 release.
