Prime Video is setting up shop in Gotham City for three new DC animated projects, including the film Merry Little Batman, with a spinoff series, Bat-Family, and a two-season order for Batman: Caped Crusader, from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves.
Merry Little Batman is an animated family-oriented action comedy focusing on Damian Wayne as he discovers he’s alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve. He takes the Home Alone-esque opportunity to become “Little Batman” and defend his home and Gotham City from crooks and villains planning to destroy the holidays. Mike Roth (Regular Show) directs from a screenplay by Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!). Roth also executive produces alongside Warner Bros. Animation chief Sam Register.
When Batman: Caped Crusader was canceled by Warner Bros. suit David Zaslav as a cost-cutting move, Warner Bros. Animation started shopping the show to other streaming services. The series is billed as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” that will utilize “state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves said in a joint statement when the project was first announced. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.” Comic writer Ed Brubaker was running the writers’ room for the new Batman animated series and told THR that he jumped at the chance to work with Bruce Timm.
Bat-Family is a spinoff series following Batman, Alfred, and young Damian Wayne. Damian is “Little Batman” in the spinoff, with the trio welcoming newcomers to Wayne Manor as they conquer the “fun and frustration of life as a super family.” Jase Ricci, Mike Roth, and Sam Register executive produce.
“We are excited to partner with Amazon to begin an all-new animated chapter of Batman. From the cinematic noir storytelling of Batman: Caped Crusader to the comedic adventures of Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family, these new projects ensure that there will be an animated Batman story ready to excite fans of all ages,” said Register.
