Yesterday, A24 unveiled a poster for writer/director Alex Garland’s upcoming horror film Men, and promised that a teaser trailer would be arriving online today. True to their word, A24 has released the teaser, and you can now check it out in the embed above!
Men tells the story of
a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.
The young woman in question is played by Jessie Buckley, who just received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in The Lost Daughter yesterday. Buckley is joined in the cast by Rory Kinnear, who played John Clare on Penny Dreadful and was Bill Tanner in the last four James Bond movies, and Paapa Essiedu, who viewers may know from Gangs of London and I May Destroy You.
Men was produced by Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, with Cahal Bannon co-producing.
Garland previously wrote and directed the films Ex Machina and Annihilation, and reportedly did some uncredited directing work on the comic book adaptation Dredd, which he also scripted. He has also written 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go, and he created the series Devs. The films The Beach and The Tesseract were based on novels he wrote. We first heard about Men in November of 2020, at which time Garland simply described it as “a low budget horror movie, set in the UK.”
Garland and A24 are being very secretive about Men up to this point, as you can tell from that synopsis. The teaser trailer doesn’t do a whole lot more than show us a moving version of the image we saw on the poster, but does appear to set up the idea that Buckley’s character is being stalked by some kind of supernatural presence in the form of a strange-looking man.
Men is scheduled to receive a theatrical release on May 20th, and we’ll have to wait and see if we learn any more about the story before it reaches the big screen.
