Truth be told I don't know if we should have been covering the planned 21 JUMP STREET / MEN IN BLACK crossover movie. The film seems to be more in line with comedy than horror, but I figure since we're covering the upcoming reboot, MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL than this film is fair game too. But either way, it doesn't really matter as today we have word that the planned crossover- which was evidently going by the somewhat confusing title MIB 23 – is dead. Sucks, I know. As a fan of both the original MEN IN BLACK and especially Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's 21 JUMP STREET and its sequel 22 JUMP STREET, I'm sad to see Sony take this film off the table.
Franchise producer Walter Parkes:
We gave it a shot. It turned out to be an impossible match-up.
Again, weak. Personally, I don't see how these two franchises would be so hard to mash-up. Hill and Tatum's characters are recruited by the MIB. Clean simple. Let's do this! But maybe it was an impossible match-up due to rights issues or something like that. Who knows. Either way, I'm bummed. How do YOU feel? Let us know below!
The upcoming reboot doesn't yet have an official synopsis, but we have heard that the story deals with
M trying to prove herself by joining the London MIB and being paired with the former ace Agent H. The pair becomes involved in a murder mystery that has them traveling the globe.
Directed by F. Gary Gray from a screenplay by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as Agents H and M, respectively, with Liam Neeson as their boss and Emma Thompson reprising her MEN IN BLACK III role of Agent O. Also in the cast, in unspecified roles, are Rebecca Ferguson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, and twin dancers Laurent and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois. Produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, with Steven Spielberg executive producing, MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL is scheduled to be released on June 14, 2019.
